Evonik’s Waterford, N.Y., Fumed Silica Facility Awarded RC14001 Certification

Plant Cited For Improving Environmental, Health, Safety, Security Performance

Evonik Industries’ Inorganic Materials Waterford, N.Y., plant has received the American Chemistry Council’s prestigious Responsible Care 14001® (RC14001) certification, which recognizes the company’s continuing efforts to improve its environmental, health, safety and security performance.

UL DQS, Inc., a leading independent global auditing firm based in Buffalo Grove, Ill., recommended the certification following an extensive review of the facility’s operations.

Evonik’s Waterford plant, DQS said, “is continually improving operations and generally accomplishing objectives. The company has worked in excess of 340 days without a recordable injury.”

RC14001 is a pioneering environmental, health, safety and security standard that integrates the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care elements with the environmental management system established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO14001).

Receiving Responsible Care RC14001 certification is a tremendous achievement that recognizes the company’s commitment and quality of its environmental, health, safety and security systems, said Jack L. Clem, a Senior Vice President and General Manager within Evonik’s Inorganic Materials Business Unit and head of the Business Unit’s North American activities.

“Achieving RC14001 certification and having independently verified systems in place that deliver environmental, health and safety benefits distinguishes Evonik as an innovative and responsible silica supplier," said Clem. "Incorporating our commitment to the community in which we operate in the RC14001 certification is part of Evonik being a good corporate citizen."

David Archer, Evonik plant manager at Waterford, praised his team in achieving RC14001 certification. “It is a major accomplishment for each and every employee in the plant,” said Archer. “Responsible Care practices are ingrained in our daily operations and we seek to continually improve our operations.”

Employees at the Waterford facility take tremendous pride in their work and receiving RC14001 certification is very gratifying, added Process Specialist Mike Slingerland. “Receiving RC14001 certification is a testament to their diligence and tremendous daily efforts,” he said.

The Waterford facility manufactures fumed amorphous silica, which is used to improve the performance of numerous products including paints, rubber, caulking, and other applications.
