Evonik Maitland Plant Celebrates 25 Years Without Lost Time Accident

Hydrogen Peroxide Site Continually Stresses Safety, Education

The year Evonik’s Maitland, Ontario, hydrogen peroxide site opened, hockey superstar Sidney Crosby was born, Canada introduced the loonie, and Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister.

That was in 1987. Since then, the Evonik Maitland site has gone more than 300 months, 9,000 days and close to 2.6 million work-hours without an LTA - a work-related injury that resulted in an employee missing a day or more from work.

“Going nearly 25 years without a lost-time accident is a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about plant employees’ commitment to each other's safety,” said Tom Bates, Evonik Regional President. “Our employees in Maitland have worked two and a half decades in close partnership with each other to develop a strong culture of safety, anchored by their tremendous work ethic and daily dedication.”

Safety is not something people just talk about, added Jack Chenault, Vice President & General Manager Americas for Evonik’s Active Oxygens Business Line. “It’s what employees at Maitland do each and every day,” he continued. “Safety is one of Evonik’s core values. We have always believed that one of the best indications of a plant’s performance is its safety record. Our Maitland facility has a stellar safety performance.”

Chenault noted that Evonik is extremely proud of the employees’ achievement at Maitland. “We look forward to another 25 years – and more - with zero lost-time accidents,” he added. They have already earned Evonik’s top safety award – the Platinum Safety Award - in recognition of their tremendous safety record.”

Plant Manager Bruce McDonald applauded the Maitland employees in achieving this extraordinary safety milestone. “Like at all other Evonik facilities, employees at the Maitland site put safety at the forefront of everything they do,” said McDonald. “It’s ingrained in each and every daily activity.”

Hydrogen peroxide is an environmentally friendly chemical used for oxidation reactions, bleaching processes in pulp, paper and textile industries, waste water treatment, exhaust air treatment and for various disinfection applications. Decomposing to yield only oxygen and water, hydrogen peroxide is one of the cleanest, most versatile chemicals available.
