Evonik’s Sanford, Maine, Facility Achieves Landfill-Free Status

Company Continues Environmental Initiatives, Recycles Manufacturing Byproducts

Evonik Cyro’s Sanford, Maine, site has achieved a major environmental milestone: becoming a landfill free site by reusing, recycling and converting to energy all byproducts generated from everyday manufacturing operations.

Evonik continues to be proactive in environmental stewardship by reducing materials sent to landfills. Recently, Evonik Cyro’s Sanford site has successfully implemented a new recycling process and as a result achieved the goal of becoming a landfill-free site. All processes are strictly tracked to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies including the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

“Recycling is a great way to preserve our environment and not fill up landfills,” said Steve Jocher, manager of the site’s Environmental, Safety and Health Department. “This is a remarkable improvement from not only an environmental perspective, but also an economical one benefitting all parties involved. It brings down the cost of doing business while achieving environmental sustainability goals.”

Drew Scott, Sanford site manager, said continuously making great strides to protect the environment is a core component of Evonik’s corporate culture.

“A proactive approach was crucial to achieving a landfill-free status. We established firm objectives and targets, and conducted regular performance evaluations on our processes to successfully implement this new operational system,” said Scott. “Our company constantly strives to implement and operate a management system to enhance environment, health, safety and security performance with the manufacturing of our products.”
