Evonik Donates $50,000 To Red Cross To Aid Joplin Tornado Relief Efforts

Company Dedicated To Providing Support To Employees, Community Impacted

Evonik is donating $50,000 to the American Red Cross Greater Ozarks Chapter, to aid those residents impacted by the tornado that devastated the Joplin, Mo., area on May 22.

“Our profound sympathies are with those whose lives were impacted by this tragedy,” said Dr. Klaus Engel, CEO of Essen Germany based Evonik Industries. “In providing this financial support we hope to help people. We wish everyone all the strength needed to persevere in these difficult times and the courage to look forward, rebuild and start over, despite all that has happened.”

The American Red Cross provides assistance to victims of natural disasters and needs corporate support to continue aid efforts throughout the area.

Evonik is committed to the safety and well-being of its employees. To support employees that were affected, Evonik is providing financial assistance and paid time off to deal with the aftermath.

“While we cannot replace the loss of loved ones, we can in some way help those who are left to rebuild and regain some sense of normalcy,” said Clive Whiteside, President and Site Manager of Evonik’s Jayhawk facility. “About twenty percent of our employees were affected by this disaster and we will give them the support and time they need to care for their families and rebuild their lives.”

The tornado touched all areas of the community. “The need is so great that everyone is banding together to help. Everyone knows someone affected,” said Whiteside. “Some of our employees have taken in family who lost homes. We continue to work together to rebuild our community.”

The presentation of the $50,000 donation will take place at 11:00 a.m. at the American Red Cross, 410 Jackson Street, Joplin, Missouri. In attendance will be: Clive Whiteside; Mark Rowan, Human Resources and Training Manager at Evonik; Greg James, Director of Development for the Red Cross Greater Ozarks Chapter; Greg Sitton, Environmental Health and Safety Manager and Assistant Plant Manager at Evonik; Tom Reid, Chemical Technician and Ed Copher, Instrumentation and Electrical Technician.

Evonik’s Jayhawk facility, located in Galena, Kan., produces fine chemicals for use in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, industrial solvents and fuel additives.
