Evonik Cyro’s Wallingford, Conn., Site Completes Successful Emergency Exercise

Joint Training With Fire Department, Hospital Sharpens Crisis Response Plans

Evonik Cyro LLC., which operates a specialty plastics manufacturing facility on South Cherry Street in Wallingford, Conn., has successfully conducted an emergency exercise with the Wallingford Fire Department and MidState Medical Center.

“Everything went as smoothly as we had planned on Saturday,” said Chief Peter Struble of the Wallingford Fire Department. “The mock drill demonstrated excellent cooperation among the fire department, MidState Medical Center and Evonik Cyro. Strong teamwork between different agencies involved during an incident is critical to achieving our desired results – the safety of our community.”

For over two hours on Saturday, Evonik employees worked with first responders to simulate a crisis scenario testing Evonik Cyro’s safety procedures and response to an emergency situation.

Susan McGaughan, business manager of the emergency department at MidState Medical Center, said Saturday’s exercise provides different organizations the chance to practice working together. “It’s important to perform these drills because it offers an opportunity for our agencies to collaborate and share knowledge and experience. When we test and refine our plans before an actual event, we are better prepared should an incident occur,” she said.

Peter Stein, manager of Evonik Cyro’s Wallingford site, praised the efforts of Evonik employees, the Wallingford Fire Department and MidState Medical Center. “Ensuring the highest standards of preparedness and safety is a top priority for Evonik,” said Stein. “Evonik Cyro also utilizes the Responsible Care program, which is a system set by the American Chemistry Council to enhance performance in environmental, health, safety and security management. We periodically conduct these drills to sharpen our response in emergency scenarios and fine-tune our safety procedures. All participants acted professionally and the unified teamwork was critical to the success of this exercise.”

Products manufactured at Evonik’s Wallingford facilities include specialty plastics found in a variety of important applications such as medical devices, lenses and lighting, automotive components, marine navigation signals, and food and medical packaging.
