Evonik’s Wallingford Site Donates $2,500 To Mark T. Sheehan High School

Students Also Tour Facilities, Experience Chemical Manufacturing Process

Evonik Cyro LLC’s Wallingford, Conn., site has donated $2,500 to Mark T. Sheehan High School to fund classroom equipment for science-related subjects.

The school’s juniors and seniors also joined Wallingford Site Manager Peter Stein and Process Engineer Kate Nicholson on a tour of the facilities where Evonik makes specialty plastics used in medical devices, lenses and lighting, automotive headlights and taillights, marine navigation signals, and food and medical packaging.

“The students found it exciting to see everyday products essentially created from scratch,” said Deborah Young, chairperson of Mark T. Sheehan High School’s science department. “Learning chemistry in a classroom sets a strong foundation for students, but seeing how it’s applied in real life is an experience they will remember for quite some time.”

During the tour, the students experienced the entire chemical manufacturing process – from when the facility receives raw materials by railcar to the chemical manufacturing phase to the finished product being loaded onto trucks for transportation.

“We’re very grateful for Evonik’s support of our science and chemistry programs,” said Young. “Our students are very enthusiastic about these subjects and the donation will enhance their experience in chemistry and science.”

Evonik continues to demonstrate its commitment to safe operations and support of the community through contributions and cooperation with local authorities. Following Hurricane Sandy, Evonik’s Wallingford site donated $5,000 to local emergency response service departments. Last year, the site successfully conducted an emergency exercise in cooperation with the Wallingford Fire Department and MidState Medical Center.

“Giving back to the community is always a top priority for Evonik,” said Stein. “Evonik not only values science but also understands its importance in educating future generations and inspiring innovation. We were very happy to offer a site tour to Mark T. Sheehan High School students and provide firsthand experience about how chemistry impacts the world.”
